Blowing out RV water lines is one of the most effective ways to prepare an RV for freezing weather, but it is also easy to do badly. The goal is not to blast the plumbing with as much compressed air as possible. The goal is to move water out of every vulnerable supply line while keeping pressure low enough to protect plastic fittings, faucet cartridges, check valves, seals, and the water pump.
That distinction matters. A frozen teaspoon of water in a low point, valve body, or exterior shower line can create an expensive leak. Yet excessive air pressure can damage the plumbing before winter arrives. The sensible position is straightforward: use regulated low-pressure air, follow a deliberate fixture-by-fixture sequence, and treat compressed air as one part of a complete winterizing plan rather than a shortcut that excuses skipped steps.
RV plumbing is more exposed to cold than the plumbing in most homes. Water lines may pass through cabinets, under floors, inside exterior compartments, and along walls with limited insulation. When water freezes, it expands. That expansion can split tubing, crack fittings, damage valves, or deform a faucet cartridge. The damage may not become obvious until the next trip, when the water system is pressurized and a hidden leak starts soaking a cabinet or enclosed underbelly.
To blow out RV water lines, you connect an air source to the city-water inlet and use controlled compressed air to push residual water out through open faucets, showers, toilets, and low-point drains. This method is useful because it reaches much of the pressurized plumbing system without filling every line with RV antifreeze.
However, “much of the system” is not the same as “every place water can remain.” Traps, pump components, some valves, outside showers, ice makers, washing-machine connections, water filter housings, and appliance plumbing may need separate attention. Owners who believe a single burst of air through the city-water connection makes an RV freeze-proof are relying on weak advice.
An RV water system is designed for normal water-service pressure, not for careless use of an unregulated shop compressor. A compressor tank can hold far more pressure than RV plumbing should receive. Connecting it directly to the RV without a regulator is a poor practice, even if someone claims they have done it for years without trouble.
Use an air compressor with an adjustable regulator and a pressure gauge. Consult the RV manufacturer’s winterizing instructions first, because plumbing layouts and component recommendations vary. In the absence of a lower manufacturer-specified limit, many RV owners use pressure in the neighborhood of 30 psi, applying only enough pressure to move water steadily. There is rarely a practical reason to force air through the lines at aggressive pressure. If water is not clearing, the answer is usually to open the correct fixture, drain a low point, or address a blockage—not to turn up the regulator.
Low pressure also gives you better control. You can hear when a faucet changes from a sputtering water-and-air mix to mostly air. You are less likely to spray water across the interior, overwhelm a fixture, or dislodge a weak fitting that would otherwise have survived the winterizing process.
The blowout plug is important. It is made to connect air to the city-water inlet without improvising with incompatible fittings. Use a quality adapter that seals properly, and do not try to jury-rig a connection that can pop loose under pressure.
Winterizing begins with preparation, not with the compressor. Park the RV on reasonably level ground, disconnect from city water, and turn off the water pump. If the water heater has been operating, turn off its heat source and let the tank cool fully before draining it. Never drain a hot water heater.
Next, drain the fresh-water tank if the RV will be stored in freezing conditions. Leaving a tank full can create unnecessary freeze risk and adds weight during storage. Follow the RV manufacturer’s instructions for the tank drain and for any tank-specific winterizing steps.
Drain the water heater after it has cooled and pressure has been relieved according to the appliance instructions. Do not send compressed air through a full water heater and assume the job is complete. The heater should be drained separately, and its bypass valves should be set correctly for winterizing. Bypassing the heater prevents wasted antifreeze later and reduces the amount of plumbing that needs attention.
Open the RV’s hot and cold low-point drains. These are designed to release water from the lowest sections of the supply system. Let them drain naturally before introducing air. Gravity does valuable work for free; skipping this step only makes the blowout process less effective.
Keep each faucet opening brief and controlled. You are trying to purge water, not run the compressor continuously against a closed system. If you hear an unusual whistle, see a fitting move, or notice a leak, stop immediately and inspect the connection. Compressed air is not supposed to turn winterizing into a pressure test.
The water pump can retain water in its housing and nearby lines. Blowing air into the city-water inlet may not fully clear the pump because check valves can limit reverse airflow. This is one reason a blowout-only winterizing approach is not always enough.
A stronger method is to blow out the main supply lines and then use the RV’s winterizing pickup hose, if equipped, to draw a small amount of RV antifreeze through the pump and into vulnerable sections. The exact procedure depends on the RV’s plumbing configuration. Some owners choose antifreeze-only winterizing for this reason, while others use a hybrid approach: air for the supply lines and antifreeze for the pump, traps, and hard-to-purge components.
The hybrid approach is often the most defensible choice for RVs stored in reliably freezing conditions. It reduces the amount of antifreeze needed while providing protection where compressed air is least certain. It also avoids the false confidence that comes from hearing air at a faucet and assuming every valve and cavity is dry.
Blowing out RV water lines does not protect the P-traps beneath sinks and showers. Those traps are designed to hold water, so air passing through supply lines will not empty them. Pour non-toxic RV plumbing antifreeze into every sink and shower drain. Flush enough antifreeze through the toilet to protect the toilet valve and leave antifreeze in the bowl, following the toilet manufacturer’s guidance where applicable.
Use only antifreeze labeled for RV plumbing systems. Automotive antifreeze does not belong in RV fresh-water plumbing, drains, or holding tanks. It is not an acceptable substitute.
Also consider drains or components outside the main living area: an exterior kitchen sink, wet-bay faucet, washer drain, or auxiliary shower can be easy to miss. Make a written fixture list for your specific RV and use it every year. A checklist is more dependable than memory, especially when winterizing after a busy travel season.
This is the biggest avoidable error. More air pressure does not mean better winter protection. It means more stress on a system that may include lightweight tubing, push-to-connect fittings, plastic valves, and aging seals. Regulate pressure before connecting the compressor.
The water heater needs its own draining procedure. It should not be treated as another section of water line to clear with air. Drain it when cool, install the appropriate plug or anode rod as required for the unit, and set the bypass correctly.
Exterior showers are a repeat offender because they are easily forgotten and often sit in an exposed compartment. Open both hot and cold sides and make sure the hose and sprayer are included in your procedure.
Water filters can crack when water freezes in their housings. Remove or drain filter canisters according to their instructions. Appliances with water connections may need their own winterizing process. Do not guess.
Air can be very effective in supply lines, but it does not protect drain traps and may not fully protect the pump or every specialty component. For many RVs, antifreeze remains necessary even after a careful blowout.
There is no single winterizing method that suits every RV, climate, and storage arrangement. But the trade-offs are clear.
Blowout only keeps antifreeze out of most fresh-water lines and can simplify de-winterizing. It works best when the owner understands the plumbing layout, clears every fixture thoroughly, and handles the pump, traps, and appliances separately. Its weakness is that trapped water can remain in places air does not reliably reach.
Antifreeze only provides visible evidence that protective fluid has reached many lines and valves. It is dependable when done correctly but uses more antifreeze and requires more flushing before travel. It can also be inconvenient in more complex plumbing systems.
A hybrid method uses compressed air to remove most water first, then RV antifreeze for traps, the pump, and selected vulnerable components. It offers a practical balance of protection and efficiency. For owners facing hard freezes or storing an RV far from home, this is often the more cautious choice.
The right decision should be based on your RV’s manuals, local weather risk, access to the RV during winter, and the complexity of its plumbing—not on the claim that one technique is universally superior.
Winterize before the RV will be exposed to sustained freezing conditions. Do not wait for the first severe overnight forecast if the RV is parked away from home or you cannot complete the job promptly. A brief cold snap can be enough to damage an exposed line, particularly in an unheated compartment.
When it is time to use the RV again, de-winterize methodically. Reinstall any removed filter components as appropriate, return the water heater bypass valves to their normal operating position, close low-point drains, fill the fresh-water system, and inspect for leaks while pressurizing. Test every hot and cold faucet, toilet, shower, exterior fixture, and appliance connection. If antifreeze was used in the fresh-water system, flush it fully according to the RV manufacturer’s instructions before drinking from the system.
To blow out RV water lines safely, think controlled removal, not maximum force. Drain the system first, use a proper blowout adapter, regulate the compressor to a conservative pressure, and work through every hot and cold fixture in a disciplined sequence. Then protect the traps, pump, and specialty components that air alone may not cover.
The cost of careful winterizing is modest compared with the disruption of repairing a cracked pipe behind a wall, a leaking fitting under a cabinet, or a damaged water pump in spring. A regulated, methodical blowout—supported by RV antifreeze where needed—is the sensible way to protect an RV plumbing system through freezing weather.
