Winterizing an RV with compressed air is a sound method for protecting the fresh-water plumbing system, but it is not a shortcut for draining the RV and hoping for the best. The central rule is simple: compressed air can remove most water from the lines only when the system has first been drained correctly and every outlet is opened in a deliberate sequence. If one shower hose, exterior faucet, low-point drain, toilet valve, or appliance line is missed, a small trapped pocket of water can still freeze and damage fittings, valves, tubing, or the water pump.

But the common claim that “blowing out the lines means no antifreeze is needed anywhere” is too broad. Compressed air is highly effective for supply lines when performed carefully. It does not protect drain traps, and it may not completely clear every low or complex plumbing run. Still, air does not make water disappear. It follows the available path, which is why simply connecting an air hose and opening one kitchen faucet is inadequate. The owner must create a route through each individual branch by opening fixtures one at a time and cycling both hot and cold sides.

Drain traps are a separate issue. Their purpose is to hold water to block sewer odors. Take the Right Position: Air-Only Winterizing Is Not Automatically Better

An air-only approach can be appropriate for a simple RV with short, well-understood plumbing runs, a reliable compressor regulator, and an owner willing to work methodically. It may also suit an owner who expects to use the RV periodically during winter and wants to avoid repeatedly flushing antifreeze from supply lines.

However, an air-only method becomes less convincing when the RV has a residential refrigerator ice maker, washing machine, dishwasher, complex outdoor kitchen, water filtration system, tankless water heater, multiple bathrooms, or other added plumbing branches. Those systems can retain water in locations that are not always obvious. In those cases, blowing out the lines is still valuable, but relying on air alone calls for a level of certainty many owners do not have.

The best defensible recommendation is this: blow out the fresh-water plumbing with regulated compressed air, bypass and drain the water heater, then use RV antifreeze in every drain trap and in any component whose manufacturer calls for antifreeze winterization. The order below is designed to reduce the chance of overlooking a branch. Adapt it to your RV’s actual plumbing configuration, and make a written fixture list before beginning. A checklist is not overkill; it is the difference between a systematic procedure and a costly guess.

1. Choose the right time and location

Winterize before the RV will be exposed to freezing weather, not after a cold night has already occurred. Park on reasonably level ground where you can access the low-point drains, water heater, city-water inlet, and exterior fixtures. Disconnect from city water and turn off the water heater, allowing it to cool completely before draining it.

2. Drain the fresh-water tank and plumbing system

Open the cold side until it sputters and stops producing visible water, then close it. Open the hot side and repeat. Do not open every faucet simultaneously. If you do, airflow will favor the easiest route and reduce your ability to confirm that each branch has been cleared.

Outdoor showers and spray ports: These are exposed to colder conditions than interior plumbing and often have both hot and cold lines. Open both sides. Drain the hose if one is attached.

Black-tank flush systems: A black-tank flush line may have a vacuum breaker or check valve that holds water. Follow the RV manufacturer’s procedure. Do not assume the system is cleared because the main bathroom plumbing is dry.

Ice makers and refrigerator water dispensers: These components can have small-diameter lines and valves that need a manufacturer-specific winterization procedure. If the refrigerator manual requires antifreeze, bypassing it with compressed air alone may be insufficient.

Washing machines and dishwashers: Appliances often retain water internally. Check their manuals before winter storage. A blown-out nearby supply line does not necessarily empty internal pumps, hoses, or valves.

Common Mistakes That Defeat the Entire Job

The first mistake is using excessive pressure. An RV plumbing system is not an air tool. Regulated, moderate pressure and patience are safer than forcing the job with a high-pressure blast.

The second is failing to drain before blowing out the lines. Compressed air is much more effective after gravity has removed the bulk of the water. Starting with a full system asks the compressor to do work that open drains can do more safely and easily.

The third is opening all faucets at once. That may produce an impressive burst of water, but it does not prove every branch is clear. One-at-a-time operation gives air a defined route and lets the owner confirm each hot and cold line.

The fourth is ignoring the water heater bypass. Leaving the heater in the plumbing path wastes time and can complicate the process. Drain it fully, then bypass it according to the RV’s plumbing design.

The fifth is forgetting the drain traps. This is especially common among owners who have heard that compressed air eliminates antifreeze. It eliminates the need to fill many supply lines with antifreeze; it does not change the fact that drain traps intentionally hold liquid.

The final mistake is treating winterization as a memory test. RVs vary widely. Make a fixture-by-fixture checklist, mark items off as you complete them, and keep that list with the RV records for next season.

Final Inspection and Spring Readiness

When finished, disconnect the air supply, remove the blowout plug, and leave the RV in a winter-storage configuration recommended by its manufacturer. Make sure the water heater remains drained and bypassed. Confirm that filters have been removed or protected, and note any appliance-specific winterizing steps you completed.

In spring, inspect the plumbing before pressurizing it. Reinstall drain plugs, anode rods, filters, and any removed fittings as appropriate. Close low-point drains, return water-heater valves to normal operation, and introduce water gradually while checking every connection for leaks. Do not turn on the water-heater heat source until the tank is confirmed full of water.

Compressed air winterizing is an efficient and effective way to protect an RV, but only when treated as a complete plumbing procedure rather than a single compressor connection. Drain first, regulate pressure, clear each hot and cold branch individually, protect the pump and specialty equipment, and use RV antifreeze where water is meant to remain. That systematic approach is far more reliable than either blind confidence in air-only winterizing or indiscriminately pumping antifreeze through every line.
