Winter storage is not a passive season for a camper. It is a controlled shutdown period, and the quality of that shutdown often determines whether spring begins with a simple inspection or an expensive repair list. A camper that is merely parked, locked, and covered can still suffer burst plumbing, a discharged battery, tire damage, roof leaks, mildew, rodent intrusion, and stale or contaminated water systems.
The strongest approach to storing a camper for winter is simple: treat freezing temperatures, trapped moisture, inactivity, and pests as predictable threats rather than unlikely accidents. Owners should complete a deliberate storage routine before the first sustained freeze, then inspect the camper periodically. Skipping steps because a winter is “usually mild” or because the camper is stored under a cover is weak advice. Weather changes, small leaks grow, and a single cold night can be enough to damage an unprotected plumbing system.
Where the camper sits affects nearly every other storage decision. Indoor, covered, and outdoor storage can all work, but none eliminates the need for winterization and regular checks.
Indoor storage offers the greatest protection from sun, snow, falling branches, standing water, and wind-driven debris. It can also make battery maintenance and periodic inspections easier. However, an enclosed building does not automatically prevent moisture or rodent problems. A damp building, poor ventilation, or an open route for mice can still create serious issues inside the RV.
Covered storage protects the roof and exterior from direct precipitation and ultraviolet exposure, but it is not the same as climate-controlled storage. Freezing temperatures can still affect plumbing, and wind can still drive rain or snow into vulnerable areas. Outdoor storage is often the most accessible option, but it demands the most careful preparation and inspection.
Regardless of location, prioritize a site with these characteristics:
A sloped or poorly drained site can put prolonged stress on tires and suspension while allowing water to pool around the camper. Parking under a tree may seem convenient in summer, but winter limbs, sap, leaves, and debris can complicate roof care. The goal is not a perfect location; it is a location where water drains away and problems can be noticed before they become major damage.
For most campers stored where temperatures may fall below freezing, plumbing winterization is the most important task. Water expands as it freezes. A small amount left in a faucet, pump, low-point line, outside shower, toilet valve, or water heater can crack fittings or components. The resulting damage may not become obvious until the system is pressurized months later.
There are two commonly used methods: blowing out the lines with regulated compressed air or filling the plumbing lines with RV antifreeze. Either method can be effective when performed according to the RV manufacturer’s instructions. The real problem is not choosing one method over the other; it is doing an incomplete job.
A thorough process generally includes draining the fresh-water tank, gray and black tanks, water heater, and plumbing low points. The water heater should be allowed to cool before draining, and its bypass should be used if the camper is equipped with one. Do not put standard automotive antifreeze into the fresh-water system. Use an RV plumbing antifreeze specifically intended for this purpose and follow the product directions.
Owners should also account for items that are routinely missed: exterior showers, spray ports, ice makers, washing-machine hookups, water filters, toilet sprayers, and any low-point drains. If your camper has a residential-style refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, or other appliance with a water connection, consult its documentation for storage instructions. These systems may have requirements beyond the normal RV plumbing routine.
Do not rely on opening faucets and assuming gravity will empty every line. It will not. Likewise, draining the water heater alone does not protect the rest of the system. The defensible standard is that every water-bearing component is either drained, protected by appropriate antifreeze, or otherwise prepared exactly as the manufacturer directs.
Leaving waste in holding tanks through winter is an unnecessary risk. It can create odors, make sensors less reliable, allow residue to harden, and complicate spring cleanup. Dump black and gray tanks at an approved facility, rinse them as appropriate for your setup, and allow time for drainage. Do not leave a sewer hose connected to a campground sewer inlet for long-term winter storage unless the site specifically permits it and the connection is properly managed. A long, exposed hose can freeze, crack, or invite pests.
After dumping, use tank-treatment products only as directed and only if they suit your storage plan. More chemicals are not automatically better. The priority is a clean, emptied system, not a heavily treated one. Never dump wastewater onto the ground, into a storm drain, or anywhere not approved for RV waste disposal.
A neglected battery is one of the most common spring disappointments. Even when the camper is turned “off,” certain devices may continue drawing power. Over time, a battery can discharge deeply enough to shorten its useful life or fail altogether. Cold weather can further reduce available battery performance.
The best battery plan depends on battery chemistry, access to reliable power, and the manufacturer’s requirements. In many cases, the practical choices are to remove the battery and store it in a suitable dry location, or leave it installed after fully charging it and connect a quality maintainer designed for that battery type. Verify that the charger or maintainer is compatible with flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel, or lithium batteries; these types do not all have identical charging needs.
If the camper remains plugged into shore power, do not assume the built-in converter will manage the battery perfectly for months. Some charging systems are better suited to long-term maintenance than others. Check the RV and battery documentation, and inspect periodically for loose connections, corrosion, swelling, or warning indicators.
Disconnecting the negative cable can reduce parasitic draw when a maintainer is not used, but it is not a substitute for monitoring state of charge. A disconnected battery can still self-discharge during storage. Start winter with a fully charged battery and make a specific plan for checking it.
Campers do not benefit from sitting motionless for months, especially if tires are underinflated, parked in water, or exposed to direct sun. Check tire condition and inflate them to the cold tire pressure listed on the RV’s tire information label or as otherwise specified by the manufacturer. Do not guess based on the pressure used in a passenger vehicle.
Use levelers, stabilizers, and wheel chocks as intended, but do not confuse stabilizing a camper with taking all weight off its tires. Whether to use jacks for extended storage depends on the RV design and manufacturer guidance. Unsupported or improperly supported lifting can damage the frame, suspension, or leveling equipment. If you use leveling jacks, they should support the camper on solid pads or blocks appropriate to the surface, not soft ground that can shift after freeze-thaw cycles.
Tire covers can reduce ultraviolet exposure for outdoor storage, provided they fit without trapping abrasive debris against the sidewalls. Avoid parking on mud, standing water, or ground that stays saturated. If possible, place the tires on a clean, stable surface. Before the first spring trip, inspect tires for cracks, bulges, unusual wear, and pressure loss. Tires age even when tread looks good, so follow tire-maker and RV-manufacturer guidance rather than judging condition by appearance alone.
Motorhome owners should also follow the chassis manufacturer’s storage recommendations for engine, generator, fuel system, and emissions equipment. Starting an engine briefly every few weeks is not automatically beneficial. Short run times may not fully warm components or remove moisture. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for exercise intervals and operating duration instead of following a one-size-fits-all internet rule.
Water intrusion is among the most costly problems associated with storing a camper for winter. A small failure at a roof seam, vent, window, marker light, slide-out seal, or exterior compartment can remain hidden while water damages wood, insulation, flooring, and wall materials. Snow accumulation and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can make weak seals worse.
Before storage, wash the exterior so that cracks and failed sealant are easier to see. Inspect the roof carefully, using safe access practices and the manufacturer’s instructions. Look at sealant around roof penetrations, skylights, vents, antenna mounts, air conditioners, front and rear caps, and solar mounting points. Inspect sidewall seams, windows, storage doors, and slide-out seals as well. Repair known leaks before storage; postponing a visible sealing issue until spring is rarely economical.
Inside the camper, remove wet towels, damp rugs, and anything that can hold moisture. Clean the refrigerator, dry it completely, and leave its doors propped open if the manufacturer permits. Wipe down the shower, sink, and counters. Empty trash, food, pet supplies, candles, and toiletries likely to freeze or attract pests.
Ventilation matters, but so does weather protection. Leaving roof vents open without proper vent covers can let rain or snow inside. Leaving every cabinet closed can trap damp air. A balanced approach is to ensure the camper is dry first, then leave interior doors and cabinets open enough for air circulation while keeping exterior openings secured. Moisture-absorbing products may help in some situations, but they are not a cure for an active leak or a damp interior. If a moisture absorber fills rapidly, investigate the source of the moisture rather than simply replacing it.
“Always cover your camper” is not universally sound advice. A poorly fitted tarp or low-quality cover can flap in the wind, abrade paint and decals, trap moisture, and damage roof accessories. A cover that holds water or snow can create more trouble than it prevents.
For outdoor storage, a breathable, RV-specific cover that fits the camper’s shape and is secured according to its instructions can provide useful protection from dirt, sun, and precipitation. Padding sharp edges and checking straps can reduce rubbing. But a cover does not eliminate roof inspections, pest control, plumbing winterization, or battery maintenance.
If you cannot obtain a properly fitted, breathable cover or cannot check it after wind and storms, keeping the camper clean, sealed, and uncovered may be the safer choice. Never use an ordinary plastic tarp directly against the RV as a long-term solution. It is likely to trap condensation and rub against the exterior.
Rodents can chew wiring, insulation, ducting, seat cushions, and stored fabric. Insects may also take advantage of quiet, undisturbed compartments. Pest prevention works best as a system: remove food sources, reduce entry points, and inspect regularly.
Remove all food, including crumbs in drawers and pantry corners. Vacuum thoroughly. Empty pet-food containers, trash bins, and recycling. Examine openings around plumbing penetrations, utility lines, and underbody gaps. Use appropriate screening or exclusion materials where needed, but do not block necessary ventilation or appliance exhausts in a way that creates a safety hazard. Check manufacturer guidance before covering refrigerator vents, furnace outlets, or other exterior systems.
Scent-based repellents are not a complete pest-control strategy. Their effectiveness can fade, and they do not physically prevent entry. Traps or monitoring methods may be appropriate depending on where the RV is stored, but they require periodic inspection. The strongest defense is a clean camper with likely entry points addressed.
Long-term storage calls for more than straightening up. Remove valuables, important documents, medications, electronics sensitive to temperature extremes, and items that could freeze, leak, or melt. Raise blinds or shades as appropriate to reduce uneven fading, but consider privacy and sun exposure at the storage location. Close and latch windows, roof vents, exterior doors, and storage bays.
Turn off propane at the cylinder or tank service valve unless the RV manufacturer or a qualified technician provides different instructions for a specific system. Verify that all appliances are off. Do not store propane cylinders in the living area or in an unventilated enclosed space. Review fire extinguisher condition and smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane alarm requirements before spring use, recognizing that some detectors have limited service lives and may draw from the house battery.
Take photos of the camper’s exterior and interior before storage. This creates a useful condition record if damage occurs and gives you a reference when reopening the RV. Keep a written checklist of what was winterized, what was removed, and what needs attention in spring.
Winter storage should include check-ins whenever practical and permitted. A monthly inspection is a sensible baseline for many owners, with additional checks after high winds, heavy snow, major rain, or sudden temperature changes. The point is not to create a burdensome ritual; it is to catch small failures early.
During an inspection, look for shifted covers, standing water, snow load, roof damage, torn seals, open compartments, tire pressure loss, pest evidence, battery issues, moisture or musty odors, and signs of leaks around windows and ceilings. Do not climb onto an icy or snow-covered roof. If roof access is unsafe, inspect from the ground and wait for safe conditions or seek professional help.
If substantial snow accumulates on the roof, removal should be handled carefully. Aggressive scraping can cut roofing material, damage sealant, or break vents and skylights. Use methods and tools appropriate to the RV roof type, and do not take risks with ladders or slippery surfaces.
A careful storage routine makes spring commissioning easier, but it does not remove the need for inspection. Before traveling, check the roof and exterior seals, inspect tires and lights, reconnect and test batteries, examine the propane system, and sanitize or flush the freshwater system as appropriate. Pressurize plumbing gradually and inspect for leaks at faucets, fittings, the water pump, water heater, and exterior connections. Test safety alarms and confirm that brakes, hitch equipment, leveling systems, slide-outs, and appliances operate correctly.
The central lesson is that storing a camper for winter is preventive maintenance, not a parking decision. The cost and effort of a structured fall routine are modest compared with repairing hidden water damage, replacing frozen plumbing components, or discovering a rodent-chewed wiring harness before the first trip of the year. Prepare the camper thoroughly, inspect it through the season, and it is far more likely to be dry, safe, and ready when travel weather returns.
